So, what does your first visit to a pelvic floor PT look like anyway?
Well, an initial evaluation typically consists of 5 things: discussion, education, examination, plan of care, and home exercises.
Now let’s break it down even further…
Discussion – The first visit always starts with a lot of talking. You will tell your story and explain what is causing you to seek out care.
We will discuss your current bladder habits, bowel habits, pain symptoms and sexual function. We will talk about what your symptoms are limiting you from doing and what your goals for physical therapy are.
Education – Next, there will be an educational component on pelvic floor anatomy and function.
Understanding how this system works provides a lot of validation and clarity of your symptoms. In my opinion, this is where the healing begins.
Examination – The physical examination can include a multitude of things such as a posture check, strength assessment, diastasis recti screen, scar tissue assessment, and an internal or external pelvic floor muscle exam.
Plan of Care – After the exam we will discuss the findings and what we can do about it and then create a plan for moving forward. Together.
Home Exercises – Lastly, we may give you a home exercise or two to get started with until your next session.
I promise you, it is never as scary as you think it’s going to be. If you are ready to set up an initial visit, fill out the contact form and we’ll get you scheduled 😊
