Naperville Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

Have you brought up painful intercourse to your doctor only to be told that it will get better with time? Are you experiencing urinary incontinence postpartum, struggling with chronic pelvic pain, or feeling frustrated by constipation and bowel issues?

These are common challenges that many women face, but they often go unaddressed, misunderstood — or worse, ignored.

At Full Circle Birth & Pelvic Health, we understand the impact these issues can have on your daily life and wellbeing. We are here to provide you with compassionate, effective care to help you regain control and feel your best.

What is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?

Pelvic floor physical therapy focuses on assessing and treating the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues in the pelvic area. It is designed to alleviate pain, improve function, and enhance overall pelvic health. This therapy is essential for women dealing with various pelvic health issues, from chronic pain to postpartum recovery.

Symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction are unique to each woman, but you may benefit from pelvic floor physical therapy if you…

  • Experience chronic pelvic pain that affects your daily activities and quality of life.
  • Struggle with urinary incontinence or frequent urges to urinate that interfere with your routine.
  • Encounter painful intercourse (dyspareunia) that impacts your intimate relationships.
  • Have postpartum complications such as pain, incontinence, or pelvic organ prolapse.
  • Suffer from lower back pain that you suspect is related to pelvic floor dysfunction.
  • Deal with constipation or bowel issues that might be linked to pelvic floor muscles.
  • Face diastasis recti, a separation of the abdominal muscles, often after pregnancy.
  • Endure painful periods or menstrual cramps that affect your well-being.

Treatment for Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

Treatment options are tailored to each woman’s specific symptoms and needs. Some common treatments include:

  • Visceral Manipulation: A gentle, hands-on therapy to improve the mobility and function of internal organs, reducing pain and enhancing pelvic health.
  • Manual Therapy: Techniques to release tension, soft tissue restrictions and scar tissue in the pelvis or abdomen.
  • Cupping and Dry Needling: Used to increase blood flow, reduce muscle tension, and decrease pain.
  • Exercises: Personalized exercise plans to restore stability, strength, and coordination.
  • Education: Guidance on lifestyle changes and habits that support pelvic health.

At Full Circle Birth & Pelvic Health in Naperville, our physical therapists all hold DPTs and practice Visceral Manipulation.

Why Visceral Manipulation?

Visceral manipulation is a powerful, yet gentle hands-on therapy that offers countless benefits for women’s health by addressing the mobility and function of internal organs. It is a hands-on therapy technique with the specific goal of allowing the body to self-correct and heal. Visceral manipulation differs from traditional physical therapy techniques because it focuses on evaluating the entire body to find the source of dysfunction, instead of solely on the site of pain.

This approach can significantly improve various aspects of women’s health, including:

  • Pelvic Floor Health: Helps alleviate chronic pelvic pain, improve bladder control, and enhance overall pelvic function.
  • Fertility: Improves blood flow and reduces adhesions around reproductive organs, supporting fertility and hormonal balance.
  • Postpartum Recovery: Aids in the healing process after childbirth by addressing issues like pelvic pain, incontinence, and overall recovery.
  • Diastasis Recti: Helps in the realignment and healing of abdominal muscles, promoting better core strength and stability.
  • Overall Well-being: Reduces stress and tension throughout the body, contributing to improved physical and emotional health.

Visceral manipulation provides a comprehensive, gentle, and holistic approach to women’s health — addressing specific symptoms by finding the root-cause.

Whether you’re dealing with chronic pelvic pain, postpartum recovery issues, or pelvic floor dysfunction, the symptoms you’re experiencing don’t have to control your life.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, Illinois is considered a direct access state. This means that a prescription or referral for physical therapy is not required for you to be seen in our practice and you can call us to make an appointment right away. You no longer have to delay your care waiting for a doctor’s appointment. Having quick or immediate access to your physical therapist can often be the difference between your condition being acute or temporary and chronic.

Although the Illinois law does not require a referral, your health care provider does need to be notified that you are receiving care for physical therapy. Because of this, we will ask you to provide the name and contact information for your doctor or primary care physician in your initial paperwork.

A referral from your physician can also assist in providing you with the highest reimbursement from your insurance provider.

Your first session will be 60 minutes, one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. You will discuss your history, current concerns, and goals. We will also discuss your current bowel habits, bladder habits, any pain that you may be having, as well as your sexual function. Next, a comprehensive evaluation will be performed. An internal examination of the pelvic floor muscles may also be performed in order to provide a thorough understanding of your symptoms. We will then discuss our findings, answer any questions and determine the best plan of care going forward.

Every one of our patients is treated as a unique individual. We address your whole body, not just the part that hurts or is injured. Our goal is to understand exactly what is going on, the root cause of the problem and why it’s important to you for us to help you solve the issue. You will be prescribed a specific treatment plan which is designed to address the problems responsible for your pain and symptoms and help you find lasting relief as soon as possible.

Because of this, it is impossible to predict the exact number of visits you will need as everyone’s individual challenges are unique. Our typical patient is seen once every 3-weeks for anywhere from 8-12 visits. We will know more specifically once we see you in the clinic for an evaluation.

Every patient is taught how to treat themselves at home using self-treatment techniques, modified yoga poses, activity modification strategies and corrective exercise. You will receive a personalized treatment program for treatment and long term prevention of your condition.

For physical therapy patients, it is important to have access to visibly examine, palpate and treat your body, muscles and tissues directly. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to maneuver if need be.

Initial evaluations are $300 and treatment sessions are $250/each.
